What is a Professional Dental Cleaning?
A professional dental cleaning goes beyond what your toothbrush and floss can do at home. Our hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gumline, polishes your enamel, and applies a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth against decay. It’s the foundation of good oral health and one of the easiest ways to prevent bigger problems down the road.
At Staley Dental Arts, we recommend a cleaning every six months for most patients. If you have a history of gum disease or are at higher risk for decay, Dr. Jensen may recommend more frequent visits. Either way, every cleaning includes a thorough check of your gums and an opportunity to ask questions about your oral health and home care routine.
Whether it’s been six months or six years since your last cleaning, our team will make you feel comfortable and get you back on track. No lectures, no judgment. Just a fresh, clean smile and a clear plan for keeping it that way.
Benefits of Regular Dental Cleanings
- Prevents Cavities | Removes the plaque buildup that leads to tooth decay before it has a chance to cause damage.
- Catches Problems Early | Regular visits let Dr. Jensen spot cavaties, gum disease, and other issues while they're still small and easy to treat.
- Freshens Your Breath | Persistent bad breath is often caused by bacteria buildup that only a professional cleaning can fully remove.
- Protects Your Gums | Removing tartar below the gumline helps prevent gingivities and keep your gums healthy and tight around your teeth.
- Brightens Your Smile | Polishing removes surface stains from coffee, tea, and everyday wear, leaving your teeth noticeably cleaner.
- Saves you money | A routine cleaning costs a fraction of what fillings, crowns, or gum treatment costs. Prevention is always cheaper than repair.
More Than Just a Cleaning
A professional cleaning is the cornerstone of your oral health, but it’s also an opportunity for Dr. Jensen to evaluate the bigger picture. During every visit, we check for cavities, early signs of gum disease, oral cancer, and any changes since your last appointment using digital X-rays and 3D imaging when needed.
If we find something that needs attention, whether it’s a small cavity or a cracked tooth, we’ll walk you through your options and build a plan that fits your timeline and budget. Many of our patients start with a routine cleaning and leave with a clear understanding of everything their smile needs. Explore some of our related services below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions about dental care, treatment options, and what to expect before your appointment.
How often should I get a dental cleaning?
We recommend every six months for most patients. If you have gum disease, a history of heavy buildup, or other risk factors, Dr. Jensen may suggest coming in every three to four months to keep things under control.
Are dental cleanings painful?
Not at all for most patients. You may feel some pressure or mild sensitivity in certain areas, but cleanings are generally comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, let our hygienist know and we'll adjust our approach.
What's the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from above the gumline. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, goes below the gumline to treat early gum disease. Dr. Jensen will recommend whichever one you actually need.
How long does a cleaning appointment take?
Most cleaning appointments take about 45 minutes to an hour. If it's your first visit or it's been a while since your last cleaning, it may take slightly longer so we can be thorough.
Does insurance cover dental cleanings?
Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive cleanings per year at little to no cost. Our team will verify your benefits before your visit so you know what to expect. No insurance? Our membership plan includes two cleanings per year.
What if it's been years since my last cleaning?
You're not alone and we're not here to judge. Whether it's been two years or ten, we'll make you comfortable, assess where things stand, and work with you to get your oral health back on track at a pace that works for you.
