What is a Comprehensive Dental Exam?
A dental exam is your first line of defense against cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems. At Staley Dental Arts, Dr. Jensen performs a detailed evaluation of your teeth, gums, jaw, and bite using digital X-rays and 3D imaging when needed. The goal is to catch issues early when they’re smaller, simpler, and less expensive to treat.
Every exam also includes an oral cancer screening, a review of any existing dental work like fillings or crowns, and a conversation about anything you’ve noticed since your last visit. Dr. Jensen takes the time to explain what she finds, show you images of your teeth on screen, and answer your questions before recommending any treatment.
Whether you’re coming in for your regular six-month checkup or it’s your first visit with us, you’ll leave knowing exactly where your oral health stands and what, if anything, needs attention. No surprises, no pressure, just a clear picture and an honest conversation.
Benefits of Regular Dental Exams
- Catches Cavities Early | Small cavities are quicker, easier, and cheaper to fix. Regular exams find them before they turn into root canals or crowns.
- Detects Gum Disease | We check for early signs of gingivities and periodontis so treatment can start before bone loss or tooth loss occurs.
- Screens for Oral Cancer | Early detection saves lives. Every exam includes a quick, painless screening that takes just a few minutes.
- Monitors Dental Work | Filling, crowns, and bridges don't last forever. We check for cracks, wear, and early signs of failure at every visit.
- Keeps You in Control | When you know exactly where your oral health stands, you can make informed decisions about treatment.
- Evaluates Jaw & Bite Health | Grinding, clenching, and bite misalignment can cause long-term damage. Dr, Jensen checks for these issues and recommends solutions early

Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions about dental care, treatment options, and what to expect before your appointment.
How often do I need a dental exam?
We recommend an exam every six months for most patients. This allows Dr. Jensen to catch issues early and monitor any changes in your oral health. Patients with active gum disease or other concerns may benefit from more frequent visits.
Do I need X-rays at every exam?
Not always. How often we take X-rays depends on your individual risk factors and oral health history. Our digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film, and Dr. Jensen only recommends them when they're necessary to get an accurate diagnosis.
What does oral cancer screening involve?
It's a quick visual examination of your mouth, tongue, cheeks, and throat. Dr. Jensen looks for any unusual sores, discoloration, or tissue changes. It only takes a few minutes, it's completely painless, and it's included with every exam.
Is my exam and cleaning done at the same appointment?
Yes. Most patients have their exam and cleaning during the same visit. Our hygienist handles the cleaning first, then Dr. Jensen performs the exam and reviews everything with you before you leave.
What if something is found during my exam?
Dr. Jensen will show you exactly what she found on screen, explain your options, and answer any questions. Nothing happens without your input. We'll help you prioritize treatment based on urgency and your budget so there are no surprises.
Does insurance cover dental exams?
Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive exams per year at little to no out-of-pocket cost. Our team verifies your benefits before your appointment. If you don't have insurance, our membership plan includes three exams per year.
