What is Preventative Dentistry?
Preventive dentistry is the foundation of everything we do at Staley Dental Arts. It’s about staying ahead of problems, not waiting until something hurts. Through routine exams, professional cleanings, and early detection with digital X-rays and 3D imaging, Dr. Jensen helps you maintain a healthy smile and avoid costly, uncomfortable procedures down the road.
For patients showing signs of gum disease, we offer scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleanings. This goes beyond a standard cleaning by removing bacteria and buildup that settles below the gumline where your toothbrush and floss can’t reach. Our team uses gentle, precise techniques to clean the root surfaces, reduce inflammation, and give your gums the chance to heal and reattach properly.
Whether you’re coming in for a routine checkup or need more advanced periodontal care, we meet you where you are. No lectures, no judgment. If you’ve been putting off the dentist, that’s okay. Catching gum problems early can prevent tooth loss, bone damage, and bigger bills later. If you’re noticing bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or sensitivity that won’t go away, it’s time to come in and let us take a look.
Benefits of Preventative Dentistry
- Prevents Gum Disease | Catches gingivitis and early periodontitis before they progress into serious infections that threaten your teeth and bone.
- Saves Your Natural Teeth | Treating gum issues early means you're far less likely to need extractions, implants, or dentures down the line.
- Eliminates Bad Breath | Persistent bad breath is often caused by bacteria hiding below the gumline. A deep cleaning removes it at the source.
- Protects Your Jawbone | Untreated gum disease leads to bone loss over time. Preventive care keeps your jaw strong and your teeth stable.
- Supports Your Overall Health | Research links gum disease to heart disease, stroke, and diabetes complications. Healthy gums benefit your whole body.
- Stops Bleeding Gums | If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, that's inflammation talking. A professional cleaning helps them heal.
- Saves Money Long-Term | A cleaning today costs a fraction of what a crown, implant, or surgery costs tomorrow. Prevention is always the best investment.
What's Included in Your Preventative Visit
Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, every preventive appointment at Staley Dental Arts follows a thorough, comfortable process. Here’s how Dr. Jensen and our team take care of your smile from start to finish.
Comprehensive Exam
Dr. Jensen evaluates your teeth, gums, jaw, and bite using digital X-rays and 3D imaging when needed. We check for cavities, signs of gum disease, oral cancer, and any developing issues so nothing gets missed.
Professional Cleaning
Our hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gumline that regular brushing and flossing can’t reach. We finish with a polish to smooth your enamel and leave your teeth feeling fresh.
Gum Health Assessment
We measure your gum pocket depth and check for inflammation, bleeding, or early signs of periodontal disease. If we spot anything concerning, we’ll talk through your options before moving forward with any treatment.
Oral Cancer Screening
Every visit includes a visual screening for signs of oral cancer. Early detection is critical, and this quick, painless check gives you peace of mind.
Personalized Care Plan
Before you leave, Dr. Jensen will walk you through everything we found and recommend next steps. Whether that’s scheduling a follow-up, adjusting your home care routine, or planning future treatment, you’ll leave with a clear picture of where you stand.

Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions about dental care, treatment options, and what to expect before your appointment.
How often should I visit the dentist?
We recommend a checkup and professional cleaning every six months. Regular visits allow Dr. Jensen to catch small issues early before they turn into bigger, more costly problems. Patients with gum disease or other conditions may benefit from more frequent visits.
What happens during a routine dental exam?
Dr. Jensen performs a thorough evaluation including digital X-rays, an oral cancer screening, and a full assessment of your teeth, gums, and jaw. We use advanced 3D imaging when needed to get the most accurate diagnosis possible.
Do I really need X-rays at every visit?
Not necessarily at every visit, but digital X-rays are an important tool that lets us see cavities, bone loss, and other issues that aren't visible during a visual exam. Our digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film.
How can I prevent cavities between visits?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and limit sugary snacks and drinks. Professional cleanings remove buildup that brushing alone can't reach. Dr. Jensen can also recommend sealants for patients at higher risk.
What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar from above the gumline. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, goes below the gumline to treat early gum disease by removing bacteria and smoothing root surfaces so your gums can heal.
When should my child have their first dental visit?
We recommend scheduling your child's first appointment by age one or when their first tooth comes in. Early visits help build comfort with the dentist and allow us to monitor development from the start.
