What is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a treatment that removes infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth. Every tooth has a soft center called the pulp that contains nerves and blood vessels. When that pulp becomes infected from deep decay, a crack, or trauma, it causes pain, swelling, and sensitivity that won’t go away on its own. A root canal removes the infection, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent future problems.
Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but with modern techniques and anesthetics, the procedure itself is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. In fact, the whole point is to relieve the pain you’re already in. Most patients say they wish they hadn’t waited so long.
At Staley Dental Arts, Dr. Jensen uses digital X-rays and precision instruments to treat the tooth thoroughly and efficiently. Most root canals are completed in a single visit, and a crown is typically placed afterward to protect the tooth and restore its full strength. The result is a natural tooth that stays in your mouth where it belongs.
Benefits of Root Canal Therapy
- Saves Your Natural Tooth | A root canal lets you keep your real tooth instead of having it pulled. Nothing functions or feels quite like a natural tooth.
- Stops the Pain | The infection inside the tooth is what's causing your pain. Removing it brings relief, not more discomfort.
- Prevents the Spread of Infection | An untreated tooth infection can spread to surrounding teeth, your jawbone, and in rare cases, other parts of your body.
- Quick Recovery | Most patients return to their normal routine the same day or the next. Some mild sensitivity is normal but typically fades quickly.
- Long-Lasting Results| A root canal treated tooth with a crown can last a lifetime with proper care and regular checkups.
- Avoids Extraction | Pulling a tooth means dealing with replacement options like bridges or implants. A root canal keeps things simply by saving what's already there.

What to Expect During a Root Canal
Root canals at Staley Dental Arts are straightforward, comfortable, and usually completed in one visit.
Numbing & Comfort
We numb the area completely so you won't feel pain. Nitrous oxide is also available if you need help relaxing during the procedure.
Accessing the Tooth
Dr. Jensen creates a small opening in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp inside.
Cleaning & Shaping
The infected tissue is carefully removed, and the inner canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped to prepare for sealing.
Sealing & Restoration
The canals are filled and sealed to prevent reinfection. In most cases, a crown is placed at a follow-up visit to protect the tooth long-term.
Tooth Pain Keeping You Up at Night?
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions about dental care, treatment options, and what to expect before your appointment.
Are root canals painful?
No. The tooth is completely numbed before we start, and most patients say it feels no different than getting a filling. The root canal is actually what stops the pain you're already experiencing. Any mild sensitivity or soreness afterward typically fades within a few days.
What should I do after my root canal?
Take any prescribed medication as directed and avoid biting hard on the treated tooth for at least an hour. A temporary filling is placed initially, so chew on the opposite side until your permanent crown is in place. Brush and floss gently, and be careful not to bite your lips or cheeks while you're still numb.
How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals are completed in a single visit and take about 60 to 90 minutes depending on the tooth. A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled to place a permanent crown and make sure everything is healing properly.
Will my tooth be sensitive after treatment?
Some sensitivity to hot and cold and mild soreness around the area is completely normal for a few days after the procedure. This fades on its own as the tooth heals. Over-the-counter pain medication is usually enough to manage any discomfort.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
In most cases, yes. A root canal removes the tissue that keeps the tooth nourished, which can make it more brittle over time. A crown protects the tooth from cracking or breaking and restores its full strength so you can chew normally without worry.
Does insurance cover root canals?
Most dental insurance plans cover root canals as a major restorative procedure. Our team will verify your benefits before your appointment so you know your estimated cost upfront. We also offer financing through CareCredit and HFD for anything insurance doesn't cover.
